What If the Makeup Isn't the Problem?

I follow very few people for makeup advice, which is kind of funny considering what I do for a living.

But there are two main beauty creators I follow because I absolutely love their makeup and their style.

I've purchased something from each of their links, and BOTH times I was terribly disappointed.

One of those purchases was an expensive concealer that was supposed to be crease-free.

Well, let me tell you. Mine creased. And it looked HORRIBLE.

I remember thinking, How am I ever supposed to believe anything this woman says again?

I had such high expectations because I trusted her. I guess I thought I was buying some kind of magic in a tube.

What she didn't say was, "This concealer is beautiful and crease-free IF you know how to apply it."

And that's the absolute truth about makeup.

Sometimes the problem isn't the product. Sometimes it's you.

I know that sounds a little harsh, but hear me out.

I get comments on my videos all the time from people saying, "That doesn't work!" or "It doesn't work the way they show it in videos!"

And I'm thinking, But I literally just showed you that it works!

What they really mean is that it doesn't work for them.

And sometimes that's because they haven't figured out how to use it yet.

Here's a perfect example.

Recently, I tried the IT Cosmetics Do-It-All Corrector, a serum concealer.

The first time I used it, I wasn't impressed. It just didn't do much for me.

But instead of giving up, I kept experimenting with it until I figured out how to make it work.

And would you believe it is now one of the most amazing concealers I've ever used in my life?

Same product. Same face. Different application.

That's why I honestly think every makeup product should come with a little training.

Put a QR code on the box. Let us scan it with our phones and watch a video that says, "Hey dummy, here's how you use this thing before you decide it doesn't work and send it back!"

I'm serious!

Because I can't help wondering how many perfectly good products I've thrown in a drawer over the years simply because I didn't know what the heck I was doing.

And here's something else I've learned.

For me, it can take five to seven tries to really figure out a new makeup product.

Sometimes something works beautifully right out of the box. But not always.

Now, does that mean every makeup product you've ever hated was actually your fault?

Of course not!

Some products are simply wrong for your skin, and some products aren't nearly as wonderful as the marketing claims.

But if it's a genuinely good product, recommended by someone whose opinion you trust, maybe give it a few more chances before deciding it's terrible.

Because I've learned that sometimes the only thing standing between me and a fantastic makeup product is figuring out how the heck to use it.

And I'm curious. Have you ever hated a makeup product at first, only to figure it out later and end up loving it?

Hit reply and tell me!

Best,
Camille

Primer under makeup is not a required step. I think a lot of people are confused about primer. Some people aren’t really sure what it does. Other people think they absolutely have to use one before foundation. You don’t. Especially with mature skin, your skincare should already be doing a lot of the basic prep work. We want our skin hydrated. We want dry areas softened. We want foundation to go on more smoothly instead of grabbing onto texture. Good skincare, chosen for your skin type, can...
